The Social Media Hashtag Theory

Social media, in the current generation, provides a crucial platform for individuals and businesses to connect, create, engage, and distribute content all over the world. Without social media presence and understanding, it’s very difficult for companies to grow their business. When it comes to promoting any product, service, brand, or content, one of the greatest social media tools, Hashtag plays an important part. Hashtags are great tools for generating traffic on any type of content on any social media platform. Let’s dig a little deeper into this tool.

What is a #HASHTAG and how to use it?

A hashtag consists of words, phrases, numerics, or keywords preceded by the hash (#) or a pound sign, used in various social media like, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. Hashtags first began to appear and became widely popular on Twitter(now X) but now it has become a crucial part of every social media platform. Hashtags interconnect words used in content like images, videos, and micro-blogs to increase the reach and create visibility.

The usage of hashtags is very simple and broad. It can be placed anywhere and it creates a hyperlink of the phases that have been used which directs to another page where related contents are shared using the same hashtag. Hashtag creates cross-referencing of contents which helps to build a network and creates space for exploration. No special software or coding is required to generate hashtags, just an easy format; pick a word or a phrase and simply put a hash sign(#) before it, no spaces, no special characters, no punctuations and that’s it. Hashtags can be used in the captions of social media posts and micro-blogs. Using trendy words or topics for hashtags helps to increase the engagement rate. Mastering this social media tools will be beneficial for any individual or company to increase their audience and create a social impact.

Why Hashtags are so important on Social Media?

Creating an active online/social media presence is one of the most pivotal parts of building any brand’s or individual’s reputation. Adapting the use of hashtags in social media platforms can be highly beneficial for marketing. The use of hashtags can create and increase the visibility, reach, engagement, and interaction of any social media post across all platforms. The use of relevant and trendy hashtags can reach a larger amount of targeted audiences and can drive new ones.

Using trendy topics on posts like #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, #FIFAWorldCup, etc helps brands and individuals to engage in a large conversation and appear in similar searches. It creates brand awareness and increases CTR. Using simple and business, product, or content-related hashtags makes it easier to spot any particular company or creator.

Now in every social media platform hashtags work as a search engine. To search for any particular thing, the audience prefers related and precise hashtags to achieve a better result. For example, if someone is looking for a restaurant to eat north Indian food, hashtags like #northindianfood, #northindianrestaurant, etc. will provide better results with options to choose from. So if a brand is engaged in the hashtag game they are likely to attract more consumers than those who aren’t. Similar case with influencers and creators.

It’s more likely to get viral on social media by using hashtags. Using proper and unique hashtags with relatable content often creates a massive outreach which makes the hashtag viral and creates a remark on the community. Every social media platform has different ways of generating and using hashtags but moreover, it works similarly, creating a space to connect, engage, and grow.
